Asian Network of A-Spec Queer Activists
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Dipa Mahbuba Yasmin, the visionary behind the Asian Network of A-Spec Queer Activists, has been at the forefront of advancing queer rights and visibility since 2020 as a valued Board Member. Leading by example, Yasmin, now serving as the Chair of the Board, spearheads initiatives to combat discrimination, violence, and hate crimes directed at asexual and aromantic individuals. Her personal journey as a survivor of ace-phobic 'conversion therapy' fuels her determination to amplify marginalized voices within her community. Driven by a sense of urgency, Yasmin dedicates herself to documenting and sharing stories that shed light on the prevalence of violence experienced by asexual individuals. Through her blend of aesthetic activism and rigorous research, she endeavors to raise awareness about the often overlooked challenges faced by her community. Her ultimate goal? To advocate for a society that embraces inclusivity and acceptance for all.

As a founding director of ANOAQA (Asian Network of A-Spec Queer Activists) since 2020, Dipa Mahbuba Yasmin plays an active role in the fight against discrimination, violence, and hate crimes targeting asexual and aromantic individuals. Drawing from her own experiences as a survivor of ace-phobic 'conversion therapy,' Yasmin is dedicated to combating this harmful practice. In Bangladesh, subjecting asexual individuals to A-phobic ‘conversion therapy’ not only attacks their identity but also violates their fundamental human rights. Unfortunately, this issue is often overlooked by authorities. Yasmin has witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of 'conversion therapy,' including instances where individuals attempted suicide due to the coercion to use Viagra (Sildenafil) to increase libido despite their lack of sexual attraction. This coercion only exacerbates feelings of hopelessness and depression, sometimes leading to suicidal thoughts. Yasmin emphasizes that true progress requires us to confront the shadows of discrimination with acceptance and understanding. She advocates for a society where every sexual minority is respected, affirmed, and celebrated for who they are.
